Santa Clara de Asís was an Italian saint and one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. Clare founded the Order of San Damiano and wrote their Rule of Life, the first set of monastic guidelines known to have been written by a woman. Known for their ascetic lifestyle, the Order became known as the “Poor Ladies”.
