Santa Clara de Asís was an Italian saint and one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. Clare founded the Order of San Damiano and wrote their Rule of Life, the first set of monastic guidelines known to have been written by a woman. Known for their ascetic lifestyle, the Order became known as the “Poor Ladies”. Following Clare’s death in 1253, the Order was renamed the Order of Saint Clare and is commonly referred to today as the Poor Clares.
